April 29 - Oakland Fields. Brentwood A and Riverdale
both advanced in the Cup Semi's to make a trip to the
State Finals next week at Crockett park. Also, Brentwood
B ran out Overton to advance in one Bowl. But it was
the Bowl Semi-Final between Franklin and the Oakland
Mud Dogs that provided the most thrilling match of the
weekend. Eventually, Oakland would hang on in this burner
to win by one lone try in the first half with a final
score, 7-0.
In this highly contested match, Franklin
looked to use their superior back-line to spread the
field. Their sure-handed #10 was good at distributing
and getting it out wide. On defense, Oakland was spirited
and saved some probable tries with some finishing tackling
in the opened field. Franklin had multiple line breaks
that were chased down or eventually riden out of bounds.
But it was the Mud Dogs pack that seemed to control
the day with solid rucking and multiple phases. In fact,
their entire back row was all over the field at the
breakdowns providing proper ball. Also, their big #3
was wearing down Franklin with his bulling pick and
goes. Eventually, Oakland were rewared for their strong
pack play and broke thru for a try near the posts. Conversion
made and score was 7-0.
The second half showed much of the same with big tackles
from both sides and Franklin again spread the ball wide
with their enterprising backline. In fact, Franklin's
#10 had another huge line break that was thwarted by
Oaklands fullback that would have been a sure try. As
time ticked down, the game hung in the balance with
both teams mounting charges. But Franklin was most ferocious
and mounted and all out assault to even the score as
they spent almost 20 minutes bashing away at their opponents
try line. However, Oakland's line would not fall and
their defense held firm. Eventually, time would expire
and the Mud Dogs were victorious.
This was probably an upset since this was arguably Franklin's
strongest team to date. Also, Franklin beat Oakland
sure handidly at the beginning of the season. The Mud
Dogs young team seemed to gain steam througout the season
and were rewarded for their hard work. Both teams played
exceptional rugby, gave it their all, and provided the
fans with more than their monies worth.
In other scores, Brentwood B ran out Overton, 40-0.
Overton played very strong being down a man throughout
the match and provided good ball at the breakdowns.
However, the All-Black's couldn't handle Brentwood's
quality positional kicking and their exceptional athletes
who bullied thru for repeated tries. Also on the day,
Riverdale defeated the Fighting Irish 36-5. Riverdale
used their exceptional line-outs and strong rucking
to bull thru the Irish defense. The Irish were continually
put on their heels even while putting up big tackles
and doing the hard work. Their #10 played very well
and tried to kick out of danger but couldn't deal with
Riverdales charging pack.
