May 20, 2004 - Nashboro Women's Rugby miss 7's State Title by 3 Points

Murfreesboro Women's and Nashville Women's combined to form Nashboro to represent the MTRC in the Women's High School State Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee. With Murfreesboro providing 4 girls and Nashville providing 2 girls, we headed down to to the great smokey mountains for our first official contact match. Game one ended with the sore being 10 - 5 for Maryville. The second match ended 12 - 10 for Nashboro. Without a third game to determine the champion, the total points scored were used to unveil the champs. The final score was 20 - 17 for Maryville. The last second try by Maryville in game 2 gave them the State Title.

MTRC Women Players:
Murfreesboro - Emily Feld (1 Try), Amber Gipson
Nashville - (1 Try)

The Brentwood Brumbies defeated Maryville RFC to win their third consecutive Tennessee High School Rugby State Championship. In advancing to the finals, Brentwood defeated Bearden High (47-0) and Maryville overcame Oakland High (38-15).

Corodova Upsets Brentwood "B" for Bowl Title
Cordova High defeated Brentwood High B to claim the 2004 Bowl Championship in what may have been the most exciting and entertaining match of the championship weekend. After a scoreless first half, Brentwood took the lead late in the final stanza but was unable to hold as Cordova scored two late tries for the victory.

January 6, 2004 - One Parent's View on Rugby

One Parent’s View On Rugby In Tennessee: THSRL, Scholarships, Recruiting and Success
By Rich Forbes: 12/31/03

While listening in the background and reading the many Rugby emails that flow, it has become clear that there is quite a bit of debate concerning Tennessee High School Rugby League athletes, Scholarships, and the recruiting of THSRL players at the collegiate level.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but thought I would voice my thoughts on these subjects. There seem to be two issues here. The first is a negative view of THSRL players by some traditional college club players, and the second is the value of offering scholarships to entice THSRL players.

The negative view of THSRL players seems to stem from the attitude some of them exhibit when joining a College/University team. Apparently this has been divisive in certain teams. Having a freshman player with up to four years of rugby under his belt is new to most collegiate teams and I would anticipate a certain level of discomfort to be felt by existing players who may have less pitch time. The problem however is not that of experience, but rather one of ATTITUDE.

The THSRL, like society as a whole, has certain players who exhibit negative personality traits. I dare say that there are cocky players who have come to collegiate rugby through traditional paths as well. The difference is that the traditional players don’t blemish a whole group of players by their actions. Handling this situation is imperative for both the collegiate organization and THSRL. College rugby can benefit greatly through the infusion of experience and talent these High School players bring with them, and the THSRL needs the symbiotic relationship with collegiate rugby.

So what to do? My proposal is two fold. The first is that the THSRL coaches and administration need to emphasize team over self and counsel rising seniors on the team dynamics of college rugby. No one rises above being “just another player” if they are not a team player and conduct themselves in an acceptable manner. Second, collegiate coaches need to recruit players who are not only excellent rugby prospects, but who will meld well with their existing team. A little “Father-Son Talk” may also be in order before a situation gets out of hand.

On the subject of scholarships I have a pretty strong view. The crux of my argument is that without scholarships collegiate and high school rugby loses one of its greatest recruiting tools. I tried to explain how I saw the perception of scholarships among High School boys to Marty Bradley (UT and SMAC) in this way:

“Most of the young players I have come in contact with play rugby for the sake of rugby, not for scholarships. The ones who excel however, like the recognition it gives them among other athletes at their school. Just being able to say they have a scholarship (no matter the size) places them at the same level as many other sports. There is a certain need to have their sport appear as good as football, or baseball, or whatever in the eyes of their athlete peers. I think that the student body as a whole respects these guys because of the nature of rugby... "the rugby mystique".

What I neglected to mention was the impact this has on recruiting high school freshman players. The first thing that their parents ask is about scholarships. It has been nice to respond that “yes there are partial scholarship opportunities”. For most this is sufficient, but there are those who need significant money to be able to send their child on to college. These families elect to pursue football. A key point here is that a college scholarship also helps in recruiting at the high school level. Every college scholarship is helping the THSRL attract the quality athlete colleges will see in four years.

OK… now we want to give scholarships, but how do we best spend this limited amount of money we get from our Old Boys and sponsors? There are two main strategies that I can see. The first is the shotgun approach in which you give small scholarships to a larger group of boys. The second is a more focused approach in which you select certain key players and offer significant money to them. I’ll address programs with NO MONEY after this discussion.

The Shotgun Approach: Offering small scholarships to more boys generates many good feelings, boosts team ties, and caters to the mindset of the typical high school rugby player. Remember most of them aren’t playing the game for a scholarship anyway. You are telling them that they are special to YOUR PROGRAM.

The Focused Approach: Offering a few large scholarships to key players who could be impact players in your program has a couple of important benefits. It allows THSRL personnel to answer YES to the full ride scholarship question thus attracting more quality athletes (possibly away from Football) who in turn may be the recipient of your scholarship, and it raises the bar for scholarship competition generating more quality players.

Both approaches have their merits and rewards. The path a college takes will depend on its individual team goal, but there may be a natural progression here. The shotgun approach might be used for a few years to build a team relationship with certain high schools or groups of schools. The focused approach would be added as a second phase once a certain team loyalty (following) has been established to focus your dollars on the quality athletes.
Remember Old Boys who have benefited from these programs will be more likely to contribute to their continued success. They have seen what it meant to them personally.

NO MONEY?
Now, let’s address the institutions who have NO MONEY for scholarships. “How do we provide incentives to attract players from the THSRL system?” Although I represent this section as advice for the no money institutions, these ideas can greatly enhance ALL programs.

I have seen certain programs that have really been of interest to me as a parent. They require little or no money yet are very appealing to me as the parent of a rising college student. Here are a few examples.
1) Team mandated/managed study time
2) Team tutors
3) Wholesome team environment
4) Supervised workouts

As a parent I guide and advise my college bound rugby player. I want him to get an education while participating in the rugby activity he enjoys. I want rugby to be a contributing factor to his success as a student as well as an athletic and social foundation on which he can build lifelong experiences. These NO MONEY activities contribute directly to this goal. Using your imagination, you can probable come up with many more.

My parting line:
There are many subplots at work here. Parents want a well-rounded educated athlete graduating from college, the athlete wants to play rugby (well beyond college), THSRL wants to introduce rugby to high school players, colleges want a successful club program, USA Rugby wants quality national players. These objectives can all be achieved here in Tennessee with a little attention to what it takes to satisfy each level of this intricate interrelationship.

You can construct a pyramid from this series of relationships. The foundation begins with the parents, sitting on top of this are the athletes who depend on them (at least initially), then comes the THSRL who introduces them to rugby, followed by the college programs, and finally USA Rugby and it’s clubs and national team. This is the development structure for rugby in Tennessee and the USA. Without any piece of this pyramid, rugby can’t reach the heights to which it aspires. Each level must realize what blocks they are sitting on and try to nurture that foundation.

January 30, 2004 - Franklin Rugger Named to USA National Pool

Franklin rugby player Chris Forbes has been named to the USA Rugby U-19 National Team Player Pool. By receiving this honor, Chris becomes the first rugby player ever selected from the state of Tennessee. Chris plays High School rugby for Franklin High School where he is a Senior this year. He earned All Middle Tennessee and All State rugby honors last year and played during the summer on the Mid-TN sevens rugby team that won the Tennessee State Sevens Championship.
The USA U-19 national team will be competing in the iRB (International Rugby Board) U-19 World Cup in Durbin South Africa in March. The United States will join national teams from 31 other countries in competition for the Rugby World Championship. Player selection for the World Cup will be made during February at the Elite Preparation and Selection Camp in Phoenix Arizona. Chris will be competing with the top U-19 rugby players in the United States for a spot on the World Cup Team. A testament to the caliber of this team is the fact that the 2003 men’s World Cup Team included 9 players who previously played on the USA Rugby U-19 National Team.

Outside of his High School rugby activities, Chris also plays in the fall with the Nashville Rugby Football Club (NRFC). The NRFC is the Nashville men’s rugby club which competes all over the South. He has also played rugby with the University of Tennessee, and Middle Tennessee State University in non-matrix competition.
When asked about his selection to the USA Pool, Chris hopes that he is the first of many Tennessee players who will receive this honor. Forbes says, “Rugby is more than just a team sport. I have played on teams with players from Brentwood, Father Ryan, Green Hills, Oakland and from pretty much all over the Tennessee. We play hard when we play against each other, but are all just ruggers when the game is over.” He is honored by his selection and is focused on preparing for the World Cup tryouts. Weekly workouts include a brutal six day a week program dictated by USA Rugby as well as his normal schedule of four club practices and two personal sessions with Cayo Nicolau a member of the USA Men’s National Team (Eagles).

As for the future, Chris will be attending MTSU in the fall, where he will be playing collegiate rugby, and hopes to make the USA Eagles one day.

Chris Forbes - Franklin High School RFC

From Director Mike Rayburn:
As most everyone has heard, Chris Forbes has been added to the USA U-19. National Team Player Pool. He will be attending the U-19 Elite Preparation and Selection Camp in Phoenix Arizona on February 19-22 in an attempt to make the USA U-19 World Cup Team. Chris is the first Tennessee player selected to the U-19 National Program.

Like most USA Rugby activities, this one is sorely under funded. Although USA Rugby expects the players to pay for their expenses, there is an opportunity here for someone needing a tax break. The price of the Camp is $190 and if someone feels so inclined, they can make a check to USA RUGBY and receive a tax deduction for their efforts. If you wish to help, please contact Mike Rayburn at director@mtrugby.com.

U-19 Information as provided by USA Rugby: Camp Fee - $190. The total camp fee will be $190. This will cover your room & board for the
camp. The due date for this will be February 16th. Checks can be made out to USA Rugby, if individuals wish to make donations on your behalf, these are tax deductible and made out to USA Rugby.

More opportunities to help may be available:

If Chris is selected for the World Cup in South Africa, USA Rugby will provide him with a fund raising program... Probably T-shirts or the like.

If directors are not planning on attending, please nominate a proxy. If the proxy is directly associated with one of the teams then please nominate a back-up in case that team is directly involved.

Dave Haines will be the tournament referee organizer and all issues regarding officiating will be through the Mid South Referees Society and the referees involved in specific matches. Referee decisions are final and no appeal process can overturn these decisions.

I want to stress the need for all teams to be on your best behavior and show respect for the event and the game overall. This includes players, coaches, parents and supporters. I am encouraging referees to be strict in regards to anything that may be deemed as dangerous or foul play. I want to promote a positive environment and loud and obnoxious behavior shall not be tolerated. Let's make sure everyone displays good sportsmanship. By working together we can make this a great event. All times are Central time zone. Teams listed first or on top are the higher seed.
